21. Bridge of Allan Match
LARGE CURLING STONE (Quarter Size Stone)
Presented by Wm. McGregor Adam JP, Whins, Pollokshaws, to be played for annually, originally by Keir & Nether Pollok Curling Clubs till places are filled up,
14th Oct. 1909. (This was the 2nd stone presented by Bailie Adam for the Keir Club match, after the Keir curlers had won the right to retain the original Stone presented by Bailie Adam in 1900 -see ’19. Keir’ history.)
The records show that only occasional matches were possible with 3 matches in the years before the First World War, and a couple in the 1930’s, then in an attempt to resurrect the Keir fixture post WW2, the Keir club found the original Stone which they had kept since 1909, and the recommenced games against the Keir Club were for the original 1901 Adam Stone.
The 1909 Adam Stone Trophy then resided in the Pollok cupboard until it was pressed into service again and presented to the winners of the "Thirds" Competition, played for in the years 1959-66. The "Thirds" competition, played in the latter half of each Season, then became the 'Eastwood Rosebowl' and the 1909 Adam Stone was then reborn into service as the Trophy for the winners of a new match (1978) against the Bridge of Allan Club.
The history of the match lies entirely in coincidence. In 1966 a match between the Bridge of Allan and Pollok Curling Clubs was arranged by Mr J Paton of Bridge of Allan with his brother-in-law Mr A Morris of Pollok, and in 1967 Pollok Curling Club put up the Adam Stone for competition, reviving the link between the local areas if not the Clubs directly. The match started on a home-and-away basis in the Bridge of Allan and Glasgow areas in the same season, but then became a one match challenge game. The Stone was given a base and "Winners circlet" by Mr Peter Smeal, Secretary of Pollok Curling Club in 1978.
Many curling friendships have been made through the annual match - curling is competition and cameraderie - and long may it continue.

A match to mark the Centenary of the first match between the two Clubs was arranged for 22nd January 2009 and held at Stirling Ice Rink. To mark the occasion a Curling Broom, suitably engraved, was presented by the Pollok Curling Club to the Bridge of Allan Club. The match was recorded in the 'Scottish Curler' magazine with a photograph of all those participating. It transpired that the result was a win for Pollok, but the main winner was the hospitality and conviviality enjoyed by all.
