15. Cameron Medal
At the Annual General Meeting of the Pollok Curling Club held in the Old Mens Club, Johnshaven Street, Pollokshaws on Thursday 30th September 1948 a Silver Medal inscribed “Pollokshaws Annual Curling Medal 1851” was presented to the Club by the daughters of the late Nicol Cameron, Ex-Provost of Pollokshaws, to be played for on the Scottish Ice Rink.
In relation to the Cameron Medal there is the following correspondence between Andrew McCallum and Robert Finlay, Secretary of the Pollok Curling Club which is preserved in the Minute Book of the Club.
Undated:
“Dear Robert, I am writing you on behalf of Miss Cameron & my wife, who are daughters of the late ex-Provost Nicol Cameron. They possess a silver medal which bears the inscription ‘Pollokshaws Annual Curling Medal 1851’ which was played for in Pollokshaws on a pond at Greenbank between the years 1854 and 1860. The names of nine winners appear, the last left no room for another name & the annual competitions came to an end. The medal, which bears the hallmark and J. R., the initials of the maker, was put up to auction and bought by ex-Provost Cameron, who won in 1857 and again in 1871. On his death the medal became the property of his daughters, who are now willing to present it to the Pollok Curling Club.
I have nothing to do with this offer beyond suggesting to Miss Cameron and my wife that it might make a useful prize for the Pollok curlers in their games on the Scottish Ice Rink.
The medal is on a stand & protected by a glass case. If you think the offer worth consideration give me a ring?”
Sincerely yours, Andrew McCallum

“Dear Robert,
I am writing you formally, as I should perhaps have done earlier, to confirm my verbal offer to bear the cost of putting a fresh plinth with a silver plate giving the name of the winning skip, and the date, on the Cameron Medal, which I understand is not to be presented until the annual meeting. I leave the whole thing to yourself and your Committee and when the job is done send me the bill. As more than four players took part in the competition it is not possible, I believe, to give the names of the winners. The name of the skip must suffice.”
Sincerely yours, Andrew McCallum

“Dear Robert,
The following should do for the inscription:-
Cameron Medal
Presented to Pollok Curling Club by Miss Annie Cameron & Mrs Andrew McCallum, daughters of Nicol Cameron, 1948.”
Sincerely yours, Andrew McCallum
The Cameron Medal is presently played for during the period from October to December in each curling season. During the season 1991/92 a record number of nine rinks from within the club competed for the honour of winning the Medal. Only Skips names appear on the Cameron Medal. However, since the Annual General Meeting on 14th April 1964 the whole rink has been included in the Minutes.
