28. Golf - The Pickwell Trophy
At the Annual General Meeting of Pollok Curling Club held in the Scottish Ice Rink on 19th April 1963 it was unanimously agreed that a golf outing should be arranged during the off-curling season. At the following year’s Annual General Meeting it was intimated that that the golf outing held last year was a great success and consequently it was decided to hold one this year on 21st May 1964 at Western Gailes Golf Club.
The President accepted custody on behalf of the Club of the ‘Ernie Pickwell Cup’ which would be presented to the member with the best nett score at the outing each year. He thanked the donor, Jack Pickwell, for his generosity and Jack in replying said it was to commemorate that both his father and grandfather had been keen members of the Club. The venue for the Pickwell Trophy changed to Pollok Golf Club in the late 1960’s.
13th April 2007 AGM: “.. The Pickwell Trophy was won by Ken Middleton with 44 Stableford Points off a handicap of 14. The cry of ‘...complete bandit’ was heard quite loudly…”
4th April 2008 AGM: “.. no-one won the nearest the pin at the 17th as the Secretary forgot to organise it in time..”
3rd April 2009: AGM – “…the day was a great success especially for the winner George Leslie who apparently played his best golf ever and hopefully for the other members will never play as well again!”
10th April 2018: AGM – “Golf – 12 competitors set out in persistent rain and a decision was taken on the course to reduce the competition to 10 holes. Needless to say that 5 minutes after this decision it stopped raining“
At the Annual General Meeting held on 21st April 1989 it was agreed that the format of the golf should be changed from best nett score to Stableford.
